Mattress Factory
Art Museum · Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
A museum of room-sized installation art in a former Stearns and Foster mattress warehouse on the Central North Side, founded in 1977 by the artist Barbara Luderowski on a model almost nobody was using at the time: bring artists in, give them a room and a residency, and let them build the work into the building permanently. It holds two Yayoi Kusama mirrored rooms made in 1996 — two decades before Kusama became a queue — and several James Turrell light installations that require you to sit in the dark for twenty minutes before anything happens.
500 Sampsonia Way, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, 15212, United States
Open most days, generally late morning to late afternoon, and closed at least one weekday — verify before travelling. Timed tickets booked online cover all the museum buildings on and around Sampsonia Way. Closed on major holidays.
