McArthur-Burney Falls Memorial State Park

State Park · Burney, California

McArthur-Burney Falls Memorial State Park lies in Shasta County near the town of Burney, in the volcanic plateau of far northern California. Its centerpiece is a waterfall of about 130 ft that pours over a mossy basalt lip and also seeps from springs in the cliff face, so the fall is a curtain of water with dozens of strands. Spring water feeds the creek year round, often cited at about 100 million gallons a day, and Theodore Roosevelt reportedly called it the eighth wonder of the world - an often quoted line. The Falls Loop Trail is about a mile - confirm - and a paved overlook sits near the lot. The park also has a campground, Burney Creek fishing and Lake Britton, and the Pacific Crest Trail passes through. It suits families, photographers and campers. It is small and crowded in summer, and the cold pool at the base is not for swimming. Lassen Volcanic National Park lies to the south. Confirm fees and parking status.

The park is generally open daily from about 8 AM until sunset, with the day-use area, falls overlook and Falls Loop Trail on that schedule - confirm the hours with California State Parks. Campers can usually come and go with a site, and the campground, camp store and ranger station keep their own seasonal hours. On summer weekends and holidays the day-use lot can fill by mid-morning and rangers close the entrance until cars leave. Snow and ice in winter can shut the lower trail or the road inside, and some facilities close for the season. Heavy rain, fire and smoke can also close trails, so check the park page before the drive.
