Meadow Lake Provincial Park

Saskatchewan Provincial Park Of About 1,600 Square Kilometres Stretching Roughly 130 Kilometres East To West Along The Boreal Transition; More Than Twenty Lakes Linked By Road And Portage, With Sand Beaches Unusual This Far North · Meadow Lake, Saskatchewan

Meadow Lake Provincial Park runs roughly ONE HUNDRED AND THIRTY KILOMETRES EAST TO WEST along the line where Saskatchewan's farmland gives out and the boreal forest begins, and it takes in MORE THAN TWENTY LAKES in about one thousand six hundred square kilometres. What makes it unusual for a northern park is how much of it you can drive to: a road runs the length of the park linking campgrounds, beaches and launches, so the lakes are genuinely accessible rather than fly-in - and THE BEACHES ARE REAL SAND, warm enough to swim from through July and August, which surprises people who think of the north as cold water only. Behind the developed strip the park holds canoe routes through the backcountry, a long section of the Boreal Trail - Saskatchewan's only long-distance hiking trail - and moose, black bear and woodland caribou in the less-visited northern parts.

Highway 4 and Highway 224, north-west Saskatchewan, Meadow Lake, Saskatchewan, Canada

THE PARK IS OPEN YEAR-ROUND WITH A SASKATCHEWAN PARKS VEHICLE ENTRY PERMIT required, sold daily or annually and recently in the CAD 10-40 range depending on term. THE MAIN SEASON RUNS ROUGHLY MID-MAY TO EARLY SEPTEMBER, when the campgrounds, beaches, boat launches and services operate; camping is reservable through Saskatchewan Parks and popular sites fill on summer weekends. THE BOREAL TRAIL - Saskatchewan's only long-distance hiking trail, running roughly 120 kilometres through the park - is walkable from late spring to autumn, with backcountry campsites along it that should be booked. WINTER BRINGS CROSS-COUNTRY SKIING, SNOWSHOEING AND ICE FISHING with a much smaller footprint of services. Highways 4 and 224 are maintained year-round. Fire bans are common in dry summers and are absolute.
