Meadowcroft Rockshelter and Historic Village

National Historic Landmark · Avella, Pennsylvania

A sandstone overhang above Cross Creek in Washington County where excavation from 1973 onward found stone tools, fire pits and butchered bone in stratified layers running back further than almost any other site in the Americas — radiocarbon dates from the deepest levels reach around sixteen thousand years, which is well before the Clovis culture that was long assumed to be the first. It is a National Historic Landmark, the dig is sheltered under a permanent enclosure and shown on a raised walkway, and the site remains one of the genuinely contested pieces of evidence in the argument about when people first reached this continent.
