Mealy Mountains National Park Reserve

The Largest National Park In Eastern Canada At About 10,700 Square Kilometres; Established 2015 And Named In Innu Aimun, Inuttitut And English Together, Protecting The Mealy Mountains And The Wunderstrands Beach · Happy Valley-Goose Bay, Newfoundland and Labrador

At about ten thousand seven hundred square kilometres this is THE LARGEST NATIONAL PARK IN EASTERN CANADA, and its name says a good deal about how it was made: AKAMI-UAPISHKU IS INNU-AIMUN for white mountain across, KAKKASUAK IS INUTTITUT for mountain, and Mealy Mountains is the English - all three carried together, because the park was negotiated with the Innu Nation, the Nunatsiavut Government and the NunatuKavut Community Council. It was established in 2015. The Mealy Mountains rise above the Labrador plateau with alpine tundra on their tops and caribou that have used them for a very long time. On the coast lie THE WUNDERSTRANDS - a beach of pale sand running more than fifty kilometres, which appears in the Norse sagas as Furdustrandir, the marvellous strands, and which is almost certainly the same shore. There are no roads, no trails and virtually no facilities.

South of Lake Melville, central Labrador, Happy Valley-Goose Bay, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada

THIS IS A VERY NEW PARK AND IT IS DELIBERATELY UNDEVELOPED. THERE IS NO VISITOR CENTRE, NO CAMPGROUND, NO TRAIL SYSTEM AND ALMOST NO INFRASTRUCTURE. The practical season is ROUGHLY JULY TO EARLY SEPTEMBER for summer travel, with a winter season for those travelling by snowmobile with local guides. ACCESS IS BY BOAT, CHARTERED AIRCRAFT OR SNOWMOBILE from Happy Valley-Goose Bay, Cartwright or the coastal communities - THERE IS NO ROAD INTO THE PARK. PARKS CANADA ASKS VISITORS TO CONTACT THEM AND REGISTER before travelling, and given the remoteness that is worth doing properly. Innu, Inuit and NunatuKavut harvesting rights operate throughout and take precedence. Confirm everything with Parks Canada's Labrador operations before committing to anything.
