A Stop On The Trans Canada Highway Between Calgary And Regina, With A Good Local Museum And Arts Scene · Medicine Hat, Alberta

Medicine Hat is a city on the South Saskatchewan River in south-eastern Alberta, about 300 km south-east of Calgary on the Trans-Canada Highway. It sits in one of the sunniest and windiest parts of Canada, and its history is tied to two resources: natural gas, found beneath the town in the 1880s, which earned it the nickname Gas City, and the local clay, which fed brickworks and potteries for decades. The Medalta potteries, a National Historic Site in the old clay industries district, preserve the kilns and factory floor and run tours plus a working studio (confirm). The Saamis Tepee, among the tallest tepees in the world, looks over the river valley on the edge of the city. The Esplanade Arts and Heritage Centre has a museum, a gallery and a theatre, and paved pathways follow the river through the valley. Cypress Hills lie to the south-east and are covered under nearby places. Winds are strong, winters are cold and summers can be hot and dry.
