Medicine Rocks State Park
Montana State Park · Ekalaka, Montana
A scatter of pale sandstone towers rising out of open prairie in the far south-east corner of Montana, wind-carved into arches, hollows and holes you can climb through and see daylight from the other side. Northern Plains peoples held the place as strong medicine and came here for ceremony long before anyone wrote it down, and the name is a translation rather than an invention. Theodore Roosevelt rode through in 1883 and called it as fantastically beautiful a place as he had ever seen. It is four hours from the nearest interstate town of any size.
Montana Highway 7, Ekalaka, Montana, 59324, United States
Open year round on a Montana state park vehicle fee, generally sunrise to sunset for day use, with a free primitive campground open to overnight visitors. There is NO visitor centre, no staff on site, no drinking water and no services of any kind — bring everything, including fuel. Access roads can be impassable after snow or heavy rain. The park is unlit, which is the point: it has some of the darkest skies in the United States.
