Medicine Wheel / Medicine Mountain National Historic Landmark

National Historic Landmark — Bighorn National Forest · Lovell, Wyoming

A circle of limestone rocks about 80 feet across on a high shoulder of Medicine Mountain in the Bighorn Mountains, at nearly 9,650 feet, with 28 spokes radiating from a central cairn and smaller cairns around its rim. It was built by Native peoples long ago — its age is debated — and it remains an active sacred site for many tribes, who hold ceremonies there. The Forest Service manages it in consultation with tribes. Visitors walk about 1.5 miles each way from the car park along a gravel road and stay outside the fence, where prayer offerings are tied. Snow closes access for most of the year. Access is seasonal.

Forest Road 12, off US Highway 14A, Lovell, Wyoming, 82431, United States

Seasonal. Generally accessible from mid or late June to mid-September, during daylight; the access road is snowbound the rest of the year and early or late snow can shift the dates. May close to visitors for tribal ceremonies. Check with the Bighorn National Forest before travelling.
