A Good Walk Or Bike Ride In Summer And Cross Country Skiing In Winter. Free. · Saskatoon, Saskatchewan

The Meewasin Valley Trail is a continuous river valley park of about 80 km of paths along both banks of the South Saskatchewan River through the middle of Saskatoon. It is managed by the Meewasin Valley Authority, founded in 1979, and it is free to use. The trail links bridges, a weir, the edge of the university campus and the Meewasin Valley Centre, and the Remai Modern art museum and the Persephone Theatre sit at its edge. Wanuskewin is a separate place nearby, not part of this trail, so treat it as its own outing. It suits walkers, runners, cyclists and families who want an easy, flat outing close to downtown, and in winter it works for cross-country skiing. It is not wilderness: you will hear the city, and there are no mountains, only river bluffs and prairie sky. Allow one to three hours for a section, or a day on a bike. Expect strong prairie wind, mosquitoes in June and a few bare stretches with little shade.

The trail is open every day of the year with no gate and no ticket, so there are no opening hours as such. Most people use it from early morning until dusk, and the paths are not lit along every stretch, so plan to be off the quieter sections by dark. The Meewasin Valley Centre and nearby museums keep their own hours, which change by season, so confirm them before you plan a stop. Sections can close for flooding, bank repair or construction, and winter grooming for skiing depends on snow, so check the Meewasin listing or signs for current closures. Cold from December to March can be severe, with wind chill well below minus 30 Celsius on some days.
