The Mekong'S Nine Mouth Delta, A Patchwork Of Canals, Orchards And Rice Paddies, Home To Floating Markets, Brick And Coconut Candy Workshops And Boat Based Villages. Day Trips Run From Ho Chi Minh City, With Overnight Stays At Can Tho And Chau Doc. · Can Tho, Can Tho

The Mekong Delta is the flat, green river country south-west of Ho Chi Minh City, where the Mekong splits into nine mouths and feeds a patchwork of canals, fruit orchards and rice paddies. Life runs on the water: houseboats, brick kilns, coconut-candy workshops and floating markets. Can Tho, about 3.5 to 4 hours by road, is the hub, and the Cai Rang floating market nearby is the biggest wholesale river market, best at dawn. Honestly, the market has shrunk since road bridges arrived, and the popular day trips to My Tho and Ben Tre are touristy and packaged, with a small canal boat, honey tasting and a horse cart. Overnight stays, quieter canals and Chau Doc give a truer picture. The delta also faces salt water intrusion in the dry months, sea level rise and sand mining, which locals live with every day. The trade, the fruit and the fish are real, so go for the water, the dawn light and the slow pace, and not for a list of sights. A night on the water changes the whole trip, and the hosts are warm.

Rivers and canals are open at all hours, but the floating markets work mostly from before sunrise to mid-morning and are thin by midday. Orchards, workshops and tour stops open in the morning to mid-afternoon. Pagodas keep daytime hours with a midday break, and boats are scarce at night.
