A Long Beach Of Warm Water And White Sand With Views Across The Northumberland Strait, Popular For Swimming In July And August, With A Lagoon And Marsh Behind It And A Swimming Area Whose Supervision Varies By Season. A Pleasant Family Beach In Pictou County · New Glasgow, Nova Scotia
Melmerby Beach Provincial Park is a long, wide sand and gravel beach on the Northumberland Strait in Pictou County, on the Sunrise Trail about 15 km north of New Glasgow (confirm distance). The water over the shallow, sandy floor of the Strait warms well in July and August, which makes this a favourite swimming beach for people from New Glasgow, Stellarton and Pictou. Low dunes and grassy flats run behind the sand, and a lagoon and marsh at the back hold birds and reeds (confirm). The beach faces north toward Prince Edward Island, so sunset and moonrise colours play across the water in the evening. A supervised swimming area runs in the high season (confirm), with changing rooms, washrooms and a picnic area, and the beach is long enough for a walk that leaves the crowds behind. Melmerby suits family days, picnic lunches and an easy stop on a Sunrise Trail drive, with food and ferries a short distance away in Pictou.

In winter the beach is bare and icy, and sea ice can pile along the edge of the Strait.
