Memorial Stadium, Lincoln

Home Stadium Of Nebraska Cornhuskers Football, University Of Nebraska Lincoln (Big Ten) · Lincoln, Nebraska

Memorial Stadium is the home of Nebraska Cornhuskers football, on the northern edge of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln city campus, a short walk from downtown Lincoln and the Haymarket district. It opened in 1923 as a memorial to Nebraskans who served in the nation's wars, above all the First World War, and its original concrete bowl still carries the carved inscriptions from that dedication. Rebuilt and enlarged many times, it now holds roughly 85,000 to 90,000 people, and on a game day the crowd is often described as bigger than every Nebraska city except Omaha and Lincoln itself. The field is named for Tom Osborne, whose teams won national titles in 1994, 1995 and 1997, after Bob Devaney's in 1970 and 1971. Its claim to national fame is a run of consecutive home sellouts that began in 1962 and is described as the longest in NCAA history. Fans come for the Sea of Red, the Tunnel Walk, the red balloons and a Big Ten atmosphere, even though the team has not contended for a national title in decades. Outside the season the stadium is quiet, and tours are limited.

NO OPENING TIME HERE WAS CHECKED. The typical pattern: the stadium is open to ticket holders only on game days, with gates opening roughly 90 minutes before kickoff, and kickoff times set by television one to two weeks ahead, anywhere from 11 am to about 7 pm Central. On other days the bowl is closed; tours and the hall of fame displays run only when the athletic department offers them. The traps that ruin a day are booking travel before the kickoff time is set, reaching the gate with the wrong bag, missing the Tunnel Walk in the security line, and driving in expecting a tour on a non-game day. Confirm current times before relying on them.
