Memphis Zoo
Zoo · Memphis, Tennessee
Seventy-six acres inside Overton Park, begun in 1906 around a black bear that had been chained to a tree in the park and grown into one of the larger and better-regarded zoos in the South. Its Egyptian revival entrance arch dates from 1909 and is a Memphis landmark in its own right; behind it are Teton Trek, a Northwest Passage with polar bears and sea lions, a large hippo habitat and a China exhibit built for a giant panda loan that has since ended.
