Mercato di Porta Palazzo

The Largest Open Air Market In Europe, Held Six Mornings A Week On Piazza Della Repubblica In Turin Across An Open Square And Four Covered Halls · Turin, Piedmont

The largest open-air market in Europe, held six mornings a week on a square at the top of Turin's old town, and a working food market rather than a restored one. Somewhere around a thousand traders set up across the open square and four covered halls, and the division between them is the thing to understand: one hall is fish, one is meat and cheese, the produce is outside under awnings, and the clothing and household stalls are a separate operation again. It is the most visibly mixed place in the city, with North African, Romanian, Chinese and Piedmontese traders on adjacent pitches selling to each other's customers, and it is loud and fast in a way that Italian markets aimed at visitors are not. Everything shuts by early afternoon and the square is swept and empty by three. On Saturdays the Balon flea market runs alongside it, and on the second Sunday of the month a much larger antiques version takes over the same streets.
