Merchants Millpond State Park

Subnational Park · Gatesville, North Carolina

A two-hundred-year-old millpond in the far north-eastern corner of the state, seven hundred acres of black water standing among bald cypress and tupelo gum hung with Spanish moss, backing into the older and wilder Lassiter Swamp. It is one of the few places in North Carolina where a coastal-plain swamp forest can be paddled rather than looked at, and there are alligators in it - at the very northern edge of their range.
