A small lakeside town on Meredith Bay at the north-west corner of Lake Winnipesaukee, where US Route 3 and Route 25 meet at the water and the town climbs a hill behind the bay. Its waterfront is the draw: a grassy park with a gazebo and benches, public docks where boaters tie up for lunch, and a paved walk along the shore. Beside it, a former mill on the stream that drops into the bay has become the Mill Falls complex of shops, several inns and restaurants built around a small waterfall (confirm current names). Main Street above has a few blocks of older shops, cafes and churches. The Winnipesaukee Scenic Railroad has run short summer trips from Meredith along the lake shore toward Weirs Beach (confirm), and the town has hosted an outdoor sculpture walk of works placed around the centre. Meredith is a convenient base for the northern lakes, with Squam Lake about 5 miles north. Summer traffic backs up at the lights where the two highways meet, and weekends are busy from July to the foliage season; winter is quiet, with ice fishing on the bay.
