Merrickville

A Heritage Village On The Rideau Canal, A UNESCO World Heritage Corridor, With The Merrickville Blockhouse, The Locks, A Mill, A Strong Craft And Art Scene And A Main Street Of Stone Buildings. A Quiet And Attractive Stop Between Ottawa And Kingston · Merrickville, Ontario

Merrickville is a village of roughly 3,000 people on the Rideau River, about 70 km south of Ottawa, where the Rideau Canal, a UNESCO World Heritage corridor since 2007 (confirm), steps down through a flight of locks beside a stone blockhouse. William Merrick built mills at the falls in the 1790s, and the village grew around grain, wool and timber until the railways drew trade elsewhere. What survives is rare: a compact main street of 19th-century stone and brick buildings, the roofless ruins of old mills beside the falls, a lockstation with lawns for picnics, and a blockhouse built in 1832 as a defensive post that never saw battle (confirm). Today the old shops hold galleries, craft studios, a chocolatier, antique dealers and cafes. The village is small enough to cross on foot in ten minutes, so the day is really about slowing down at the water. Summer weekends bring cyclists, boaters and day visitors from Ottawa, while weekdays outside July and August are far quieter.

The village is open all year, and walking the main street, the lock gardens and the riverbank costs nothing at any hour. The blockhouse and the lockstation are seasonal, usually open daily from about mid May to mid October, with hours from mid-morning to late afternoon - confirm with Parks Canada. Shops and studios keep their own hours, often 10 to 5, with shorter days on Monday and Tuesday outside summer. Boats pass through the locks from roughly mid May to mid October, and the canal is closed to boats in winter. Winter visits suit quiet walks, though many galleries close or open only on weekends.
