Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge

Wildlife Reserve · Titusville, Florida

A hundred and forty thousand acres of salt marsh, lagoon and scrub wrapped around the Kennedy Space Center — the refuge exists because NASA bought a vast buffer zone in the 1960s and then had no use for most of it. It now holds more federally listed threatened and endangered species than any other refuge in the continental United States, which is an unlikely consequence of the space programme.

1987 Scrub Jay Way, Titusville, Florida, 32782, United States

Refuge open daily during daylight. The visitor centre keeps limited days. Parts close for launch operations without much notice.
