Casino And Golf Town On I 15 At The Arizona Line, 80 Miles North East Of Las Vegas, Settled By Mormon Farmers In The 1880s · Mesquite, Nevada
Mesquite is a small casino, golf and retirement city of roughly 20,000 people on Interstate 15 in the far north-east corner of Clark County, about 80 miles north-east of Las Vegas and right at the Arizona line. Mormon farmers settled the Virgin River bottomland here in the 1880s after earlier attempts were washed out by floods, and it stayed a quiet farming community until casinos began arriving in the late twentieth century to catch drivers from Utah at the first Nevada exit; it became a city in the 1980s. Today a handful of mid-sized casino resorts sit along Mesquite Boulevard and the freeway exits, surrounded by golf courses, retirement communities, chain stores and restaurants. Rooms are cheap by Las Vegas standards, golf is the main draw for many visitors, and most come from St George, Utah, about 40 minutes up the road, or stop on the drive between Las Vegas and Zion. It is a pleasant, low-key stop and a base for Gold Butte and the Virgin River valley, not a destination to plan a trip around, and summer heat is severe.

NO OPENING TIME HERE WAS CHECKED. The typical pattern: the casino floors are open 24 hours; casino restaurants, buffets and cafes keep their own hours, and some buffets run only on certain days or have closed; golf courses open at dawn; the heritage museum keeps limited daytime hours on some weekdays; shops and chain restaurants keep ordinary hours. The traps that ruin a day are the time zone change at the Arizona and Utah lines, arriving for a buffet that no longer runs or runs only on weekends, midday golf in summer, a crash closing I-15 in the Virgin River Gorge, and starting a Gold Butte trip late in the day in the heat. Confirm current times before relying on them.
