Metsovo
Vlach Mountain Town On The Pindus Watershed, Endowed By Its Emigrant Merchant Families: Slate Roofs, A Folk Art Mansion Museum, A Small Ski Centre And The Smoked Cheeses Named After It · Metsovo, Epirus
Metsovo is a Vlach mountain town on the Pindus watershed in Epirus, spilling down a steep slope at about 1,150 m beside the old Katara pass road between Ioannina and Meteora. Its emigrant merchant families made money abroad and sent it home, and the result is unusual for a village of 3,000 or so: a serious gallery of Greek painting, a restored eighteenth-century mansion museum, schools, a hospital and a winery, all endowed by benefactors whose names are on half the buildings. It is also a food name, since the smoked cheese Metsovone and its cousin Metsovela are made here alongside mountain wine and cured meats, and some older residents still wear the dark traditional dress in the square. Winter is the busy season, when Greek families fill the fireplaces and a small ski centre runs above the town. Honest caveats: this is a half-day town, not a base for a week; the lanes are steeply stepped; the souvenir shops sell much the same rugs and cheese; coaches pause here between Ioannina and Meteora; and in high summer it can feel half asleep.

The town itself is open and free at all hours, and the square, the lanes and the viewpoints need no ticket. The Tositsa mansion museum is shown on guided visits that have historically started on or near the hour, with a midday break and a weekly closing day, so check the board at the door or ask at your lodging the evening before. The Averoff Gallery keeps longer hours, usually daily with one weekday closed and a longer summer pattern; both shut on the main Greek public holidays - confirm current hours for each. The Agios Nikolaos monastery below the village is opened by a keeper in daylight hours. The small ski slopes above town run only when there is snow, roughly late December to March. Nothing needs booking except rooms at Christmas, New Year, Carnival and Easter, and winter weekends, which fill weeks ahead.
