Mexiquillo
A Sierra Of Pine Forest And Tall Volcanic Rock Pillars, A Tourist Centre Run By The Local Ejido With Cabins, Trails Among The Formations And A Small Waterfall. A Weekend Escape For People From Durango, Quiet Outside Holiday Weeks And Cold In Winter · Pueblo Nuevo, Durango
Mexiquillo is a pine-forested stretch of the Sierra Madre Occidental in the south of Durango state, best known for tall volcanic rock pillars that stand among the trees like organ pipes. The ejido (the local community land holders) runs a small tourist centre with cabins, camping, simple trails among the formations, canyon walks, a modest waterfall and activities such as ziplines and horseback rides. It is a weekend escape for people from Durango city, about 100 km away, and is reached through the town of Pueblo Nuevo and its forest roads. It suits families, couples and walkers who want cool air and easy scenery without crowds. It is worth the detour for a night or two in fine weather; it is not a stop for people short of time, and it feels cold in winter. Bring warm layers, cash and your own food, since supplies at the centre are limited and the nearest proper shops are in Pueblo Nuevo.
