Michigan International Speedway

Racing Circuit · Brooklyn, Michigan

Michigan International Speedway is a two-mile, D-shaped oval at Brooklyn, in the Irish Hills of Lenawee County, about an hour from Ann Arbor. It opened in 1968 and is known for wide, high-speed racing; NASCAR Cup weekends are the main draw, usually in June and August though dates change, and IndyCar raced here for many years. Capacity was once more than 100,000, and has since been cut to tens of thousands, so the stands feel less full than the old photographs suggest. Many fans camp in the infield or in lots around the track, and the weekend feels like a festival. Outside race dates the track is mostly quiet, with some track-day and driving events. Bring earplugs, sun protection and patience for race-weekend traffic on the local roads. Check ticket, bag and camping rules ahead of time, because they change by event. This is a venue for people who enjoy loud, open-air racing rather than a sightseeing stop.

The speedway is open mainly for scheduled events: NASCAR race weekends, other series, concerts, driving programs and track days. Gates for a race weekend typically open early in the morning, with practice and qualifying on Friday or Saturday and the main race on Sunday, though the schedule differs by series. Camping areas usually open a few days before the race and close on Monday. Outside event days there is no regular public access, and the office has limited hours. Tours and driving experiences, where offered, run on a seasonal calendar, so confirm dates, ages and prices with the speedway before you travel. Check the event page for gate times, because they change with weather and the television schedule.
