Mid-America Science Museum

Arkansas'S Principal Hands On Science Centre, Opened 1979 On A Wooded Site Outside Hot Springs. The Building Is A National Historic Landmark Of Modern Architecture For Its 1970s Design. · Hot Springs, Arkansas

Mid-America is the state's hands-on science centre, built in 1979 on a wooded hillside outside Hot Springs in a low timber-and-glass building that is itself designated for its architecture. Inside are the usual excellent things - a Tesla coil that throws a long arc on the hour, an indoor digital dome, physics and perception exhibits children can break without consequence - and outside are woodland trails, a treetop canopy walk and a skywalk out over the ravine. It is unapologetically aimed at children and it is the best wet-afternoon answer in Hot Springs, which otherwise has very little for them that is not a bathhouse.

500 Mid America Boulevard, Hot Springs, Arkansas, 71913, United States

Open most days on daytime hours, with a closed weekday in some seasons and closure on major holidays. Admission is ticketed, with reductions for children and seniors. The Tesla coil demonstration and the digital dome run to posted times through the day, and planning a visit around them is worth doing. Outdoor trails and the canopy walk close in severe weather. Confirm hours before travelling.
