Middelaldercentret, the Medieval Centre

Living Medieval Town And Harbour Of Around 1400, With Working Trebuchets, Jousting, Craftspeople And Ships, On The Shore Of Guldborgsund · Nykobing Falster, Region Zealand

Middelaldercentret, the Medieval Centre, is a reconstructed medieval town and harbour on the shore of Guldborgsund at Sundby, just across the water from Nykobing Falster in the far south of Zealand region. Opened in the early 1990s as a research and teaching project, it recreates a small Danish market town of around 1400, the time of Queen Margrethe I and the Kalmar Union: merchants' houses, workshops, a tavern, a harbour with reconstructed ships, and a field of full-size siege engines. In summer the town is peopled by staff and volunteers in period dress working as smiths, potters, rope-makers, cooks and merchants, knights joust on horseback, and the great trebuchets hurl stones at set times - often described as among the largest working trebuchets anywhere. It is a lively day out for families and for anyone curious about how medieval technology worked. The honest caveat: it is seasonal, roughly spring to autumn with the full programme in the summer holiday, and it lies about 1.5 hours from Copenhagen, so it needs a full day.

Trebuchet shooting and jousting happen at set times, usually once or twice a day in high season - confirm.
