Milan Cathedral

Cattedrale Metropolitana Di Milano; Veneranda Fabbrica Del Duomo, Founded 1387; No UNESCO Listing · Milan, Lombardy

Six centuries in the building and still the largest church in Italy: a Gothic mountain of Candoglia marble begun in 1386, given its facade under Napoleon in 1812 and finished off with its last bronze door in 1965. It carries 135 spires, more than three thousand statues and a gilded copper Madonnina hoisted to 108.5 metres in 1774, and the point of coming is that you can walk among all of it: stairs or a lift take you onto the roof terraces to wander a forest of stone at rooftop height over the city. Inside are a brass meridian line laid across the naves in 1786, the crystal urn of St Charles Borromeo in the crypt and the flayed St Bartholomew carrying his own skin. In June 2026 the last scaffolding came off the summit, so the whole profile is visible for the first time since 2017. Entry for prayer is free by the north door; everything else is ticketed, and the roof is the ticket worth buying.
