Mill Mountain Star

Modern Monument · Roanoke, Virginia

An eighty-eight-foot steel star wrapped in two thousand feet of neon, standing on top of Mill Mountain a thousand feet above downtown Roanoke. It was put up in 1949 as a Christmas decoration by the local merchants' association, was never taken down, and is the largest freestanding illuminated man-made star in the world. Roanoke has called itself the Star City of the South ever since.
