Milwaukee Art Museum

Art Museum · Milwaukee, Wisconsin

A lakefront museum of roughly 35,000 works whose 2001 Quadracci Pavilion by Santiago Calatrava is the reason most visitors have heard of it — a white concrete hall topped by the Burke Brise Soleil, a movable sunscreen with a 217-foot wingspan that opens and closes on a daily schedule like something breathing. The collection is a strong regional one rather than a national heavyweight, with real depth in the Ashcan School, German Expressionism through the 1975 Bradley bequest, folk and self-taught art, and one of the largest Georgia O'Keeffe holdings in the country — O'Keeffe was born about eighty miles away.
