Milwaukee County Zoo
Zoo · Milwaukee, Wisconsin
A large county zoo on the western edge of Milwaukee, founded in 1892 in Washington Park and moved to its present 200-acre site between 1958 and 1963. The move was the point: it was rebuilt around predator-and-prey panoramas, where lions appear to be looking straight at zebra and only a hidden moat separates them, and that layout was widely copied afterwards. It is a working municipal zoo rather than a national destination, which is exactly what makes it a good half-day once you are already in Milwaukee.
