Milwaukee Public Museum
Natural History · Milwaukee, Wisconsin
Wisconsin's largest natural history museum and its most visited museum of any kind, holding more than four million objects in a 1962 building on West Wells Street. Its reputation rests on immersion rather than scale: the Streets of Old Milwaukee, a full-size 1890s city block you walk down in permanent evening light, and a set of habitat dioramas whose techniques the museum effectively invented and which other institutions copied for a century. THE 2026 SEASON IS ITS LAST IN THIS BUILDING — a replacement, the Nature and Culture Museum of Wisconsin, is due to open in the Haymarket district in 2027.
