Minaret of Jam
Archaeological · Jam, Ghor
A 65-metre tower of carved brick and turquoise inscription standing alone where the Hari Rud and Jam Rud meet, deep in the mountains of Ghor — raised around 1190 at the height of the Ghurid empire and possibly marking their lost summer capital of Firozkoh. It was Afghanistan's first World Heritage inscription in 2002 and remains on the List of World Heritage in Danger, threatened by river erosion, lean and looting. Reaching it is a serious multi-day 4x4 expedition, which is precisely why almost no one has stood beneath it.
