Minca and the Sierra Nevada Foothills

A Coffee And Cacao Farming Village On The Northern Slope Of The Sierra Nevada De Santa Marta. Known For Hillside Hostels, Birdwatching, The Marinka And Pozo Azul Waterfalls And The Finca La Victoria Coffee Plantation. · Minca, Magdalena

Minca is a small coffee and cacao village on the northern slope of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, about 45 minutes uphill from Santa Marta, and it is the cool, green escape from the heat of the coast. The road is partly rough, so most visitors ride in a shared 4x4 colectivo. The village itself is modest: a few streets, simple restaurants, and a river. The real draw is the hillside around it, with hostels and lodges in the cloud forest, two waterfalls with swimming pools, working coffee and cacao farms that offer tours, and some of the best birdwatching in Colombia, with several hundred species recorded and a few found nowhere else. Be honest about what it is: backpacker-heavy, hostel-led, busy at weekends, and with patchy phone signal and little cash on hand. It suits two or three slow nights of walks, birds and hammocks rather than a checklist, and it is a separate trip from any long trek into the Sierra. Bring cash and a rain layer, and expect to walk or ride a moto-taxi to reach most beds.

Mountain village about 650 m above Santa Marta, 45 minutes by shared car, with coffee farms, waterfalls and cloud-forest lodges, Minca, Magdalena, Colombia

The village and the paths are open at all hours and cost nothing to walk. Farm tours, waterfall entries and bird walks run mainly in the morning and early afternoon, often on set days, and some close on certain weekdays or in heavy rain, so ask your hostel the evening before. Colectivos from Santa Marta leave when full through the day and become scarce late in the afternoon. Restaurants close early. Weekends are busiest.
