Mineral Point
Heritage District · Mineral Point, Wisconsin
A lead-mining town in the southwest Wisconsin hills built by Cornish miners in the 1830s, who worked stone the way they had at home and left a street of limestone cottages that looks like nowhere else in the Midwest. It is the third-oldest city in Wisconsin and was the first place in the state listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The mining went, the town nearly emptied, and artists bought the buildings cheaply from the 1930s onward — which is why High Street is now studios and galleries in Cornish stone.
