Mingan Archipelago
National Park Reserve (Parks Canada) · Havre-Saint-Pierre, Quebec
Mingan Archipelago National Park Reserve is a string of about 40 limestone islands and more than 1,000 islets off Quebec's north shore, in the northern Gulf of St. Lawrence. Parks Canada protects it. Waves, frost and ice have carved the rock into 'flowerpot' monoliths: tall stone pillars, some with trees growing on top, standing on the beaches and in the shallows. Atlantic puffins and other seabirds nest on some islands in summer, and seals and whales feed in the cold water around them. The bases are Havre-Saint-Pierre and Longue-Pointe-de-Mingan, and you reach the islands by boat shuttle from several operators, usually June to September, so confirm. It suits patient travellers who like wild coast and quiet. It is a very long drive on Route 138 from Quebec City, roughly nine to ten hours, so plan at least two or three days on site. Fog and wind cancel sailings. It is not a day trip from anywhere, and the islands are cold even in July, so dress for the sea, not the beach.

The park reserve itself is open all year, but in practice it is a summer destination. Boat shuttles to the islands generally run from about June to September, with the busiest sailings in July and August, and the schedules, operators and departure points change by year, so confirm before you drive. Parks Canada information centres at Havre-Saint-Pierre and Longue-Pointe-de-Mingan are seasonal and keep limited days outside summer. Sailings leave on a set timetable and are cancelled in fog, high wind or heavy swell, so the boat, not your plan, sets the day. Island camping needs a reservation and a Parks Canada camping permit. Out of season there are no regular boats and the islands are effectively closed to ordinary visitors. Daylight is long in June and July.
