Minneapolis Institute of Art
Art Museum · Minneapolis, Minnesota
An encyclopaedic museum of around ninety thousand works covering five thousand years, in a 1915 McKim, Mead and White building south of downtown Minneapolis with later wings by Kenzo Tange and Michael Graves. Its Asian collection, and the Chinese holdings in particular, are among the strongest in the United States. It is free — general admission has never been charged, which for a collection of this quality is close to unique in America and is the single most important thing to know about it.
