Minnesota Landscape Arboretum

Arboretum · Chaska, Minnesota

Twelve hundred acres of garden, prairie and woodland west of the Twin Cities, run by the University of Minnesota and functioning as a working research station as much as a public garden — this is where cold-hardy plants are bred for a climate that kills most things. The apple programme next door produced the Honeycrisp, along with Zestar and SweeTango, which is a genuine claim to have changed what the world eats. A three-mile drive loops through the collections, and you can see most of it without leaving the car.

3675 Arboretum Drive, Chaska, Minnesota, 55318, United States

Open daily year round, generally 10:00 to sunset with seasonal variation, and admission is charged. Timed entry applies at peak periods and some days are members-only in the busiest weeks — check the calendar. The winter lights programme runs from late November, is separately ticketed and timed, and sells out weeks ahead. Parking is included. There is no useful public transport; it is about 40 minutes west of Minneapolis.
