Minnesota State Capitol
National Historic Landmark · Saint Paul, Minnesota
Cass Gilbert's 1905 capitol in Saint Paul, built in white Georgia marble with a dome modelled on St Peter's that is among the largest self-supporting marble domes in the world. On the roof above the south entrance stands the Quadriga — four gilded horses, two women and a charioteer, by Daniel Chester French and Edward Potter — and you can get out onto the roof beside them on a guided tour. A four-year, three-hundred-million-dollar restoration finished in 2017, and the building is free to walk into and free to tour.
75 Reverend Doctor Martin Luther King Junior Boulevard, Saint Paul, Minnesota, 55155, United States
Free and open to the public with no ticket, generally weekdays with shorter weekend hours; closed on public holidays. Free guided tours run several times daily on weekdays and less often at weekends. The roof and Quadriga tour is seasonal, weather-dependent and worth booking ahead. When the legislature sits, roughly January to May, chambers may be closed to tours but hearings and floor sessions are open from the public galleries. Security screening applies at entry.
