Fort Smith's riverfront row of bordellos was licensed, taxed and inspected by the city at the turn of the twentieth century, and Miss Laura's is the last of them standing. The 1898 building has been restored to its period and serves as the city's official visitor centre, which means the person handing you a map of Arkansas is doing it in a former brothel - and it is the only such building on the National Register. Staff give free tours of the upstairs rooms and tell the story straight, including the economics of it and what happened to the women when the row was shut down. It takes half an hour and costs nothing.
