Mission La Purísima Concepción
California Mission · Lompoc, California
La Purisima Mission State Historic Park lies in a quiet valley near Lompoc in Santa Barbara County, among rolling grassland, oaks and the low hills of the central coast. The mission was founded in 1787 as the eleventh of the California chain and, after an earthquake wrecked the first site, was rebuilt on the present ground in 1813 - confirm the dates. The Civilian Conservation Corps restored it in the 1930s, and it is often described as the most completely restored mission complex in California: not just a church but the workshops, living quarters, water system and fields. Almost every building can be entered, and livestock graze the grounds - confirm which animals are kept. Living-history days bring costumed interpreters to the forge and looms on some days - confirm the calendar. It is a state historic park with a day-use fee, not a parish, so Mass is not routine. Inland summers are hot and the wind is steady. Allow two to three hours, longer for the trails.

The park is normally open daily during the day, commonly from the morning until late afternoon, with the grounds and the visitor centre keeping slightly different times and closures on a few holidays - confirm the current schedule with California State Parks. A day-use fee is charged per vehicle, commonly in the range of USD 5-15, with lower or no charge for walkers in some cases - confirm the amount and which passes are accepted. A guided tour has commonly run once a day at a set time, and living-history programmes run on selected days and weekends only, so check the calendar before you drive out. Wind, heat, wildfire smoke and storm damage can close trails or buildings at short notice.
