Mission San Francisco Solano
California Mission · Sonoma, California
Mission San Francisco Solano stands on the edge of the plaza in the town of Sonoma, in the wine country north of San Francisco. It was founded in 1823 - confirm - and is the twenty-first and last of the California missions, and the only one begun after Mexico won independence from Spain. The mission is one of the units of Sonoma State Historic Park, and the same park runs other historic buildings around the plaza; a ticket may cover several of them - confirm which. What you see is small: a low adobe chapel, a long arcaded building with a museum, and a courtyard. It is no longer an active parish - confirm - so treat it as a museum rather than a place of worship. Sonoma Plaza itself is the real setting, with tasting rooms, restaurants and shade trees within a short walk. Allow an hour for the mission and more if you link it to the other park buildings and a lunch. Summer afternoons are hot, and weekends fill the plaza.
114 East Spain Street, Sonoma, California, 95476, United States
The mission is normally open to visitors during the day, commonly from about 10 AM to 5 PM, and closed on some major holidays - confirm the current schedule with California State Parks. A small admission fee is charged, commonly in the range of USD 3-10, and it may also admit you to other Sonoma State Historic Park buildings on the plaza - confirm what is included and whether children are free. The chapel and museum rooms can close for staffing, repairs or private events without much notice. Plaza parking is on the street, with time limits at busy hours, so confirm local signs before you leave the car.
