Mission San Gabriel Arcángel
California Mission · San Gabriel, California
Mission San Gabriel Arcangel stands in the city of San Gabriel in the San Gabriel Valley, about ten miles east of downtown Los Angeles. Founded in 1771, it is usually counted as the fourth California mission - confirm - and is often called the Queen of the Missions. Its thick buttressed church, with capped buttresses and a Moorish-influenced look, is unlike most of its neighbours. A bell wall holds a row of bells, and the grounds include a museum, gardens and a cemetery. In July 2020 a fire badly damaged the church roof and interior, and restoration followed - confirm the current status and what has reopened. The mission is a very active parish serving a large and varied community, so services come first. Most visitors need an hour. The Mission Playhouse across the street is a separate venue, and parking can be tight. Parking nearby is tight, so use the mission lot. Expect valley heat in summer and busy weekends.

The church closes to sightseeing during Mass, which is held several times a day, and on major feast days and holidays. After the 2020 fire, repair work has changed which rooms are open; ask at the entrance on arrival. Weddings, funerals and parish events can close the church with little warning.
