Mission San Xavier del Bac

National Historic Landmark — Active Parish On The Tohono O'Odham Nation · Tucson, Arizona

A white Spanish colonial church on the Tohono O'odham Nation south of Tucson, known as the White Dove of the Desert. The mission was founded in 1692 by the Jesuit Eusebio Francisco Kino; the present church was built by Franciscans with O'odham labour between 1783 and 1797, and its interior is filled with painted and carved saints, murals and gilded altarpieces. One of its two towers was never finished. It is a National Historic Landmark and still an active parish serving the O'odham community. Entry is free, and O'odham vendors sell frybread on the plaza. Conservators have spent decades restoring the interior paintings and the exterior plaster.
