Mississippi Civil Rights Museum

History Museum · Jackson, Mississippi

The first state-funded civil rights museum in the United States, opened in Jackson in December 2017 and sharing a building and a ticket with the Museum of Mississippi History next door — the pair are known locally as the Two Mississippi Museums. Eight galleries cover the movement from 1945 to 1976 in the state where the resistance was most violent: Emmett Till, Medgar Evers, the Freedom Rides, Freedom Summer, the murders at Philadelphia, Fannie Lou Hamer at Atlantic City. It does not soften any of it, and that a Mississippi legislature paid for it is part of what the building means.

222 North Street, Jackson, Mississippi, 39201, United States

Open Tuesday to Saturday, generally 9 AM to 5 PM, with Sunday afternoon opening and CLOSED MONDAYS. Closed on major holidays. One ticket admits to both the Mississippi Civil Rights Museum and the Museum of Mississippi History in the same building.
