Mississippi Petrified Forest
National Natural Landmark · Flora, Mississippi
A half-mile trail through a hillside of enormous fossilised logs near Flora, about half an hour north-west of Jackson, and a National Natural Landmark. The trees were washed down by a river roughly thirty-six million years ago, buried, and turned to stone; erosion has since exposed them where they lie. It is the only site of its kind in the eastern United States, it is privately owned and run by the same family who opened it in the 1960s, and it takes about an hour.
124 Forest Park Road, Flora, Mississippi, 39071, United States
Open daily, generally 9 AM to 5 PM with shorter hours in winter and closure on major holidays — a small privately run site, so verify before travelling. Small admission paid at the entrance. Gemstone panning is charged separately. A small campground operates on site.
