Missouri Botanical Garden
Botanical Garden · St. Louis, Missouri
Seventy-nine acres in south St. Louis that opened to the public in 1859 as Henry Shaw's private garden and has been running ever since, now a National Historic Landmark and one of the world's serious botanical research institutions. Its herbarium holds more than seven and a half million specimens - the second largest in North America after the New York Botanical Garden - and the Peter H. Raven Library covers something like 85 per cent of everything ever published on systematic botany. It is also, separately, a very good place to spend an afternoon.
4344 Shaw Boulevard, St. Louis, Missouri, 63110, United States
Open daily, generally 9 AM to 5 PM with extended hours in summer and for seasonal events. Closed Christmas Day. The Climatron and the other glasshouses keep the same hours as the garden. Some areas close earlier in winter. Parking on site is free.
