Missouri Headwaters State Park

National Historic Landmark · Three Forks, Montana

The place where the Jefferson, the Madison and the Gallatin come together and become the Missouri — the start of a river that runs two and a half thousand miles to St Louis and, with the Mississippi below it, drains a third of the continent. Lewis and Clark reached it on 27 July 1805 and named the three forks after the President, the Secretary of State and the Secretary of the Treasury. Sacagawea had been taken from a camp near here as a girl five years earlier, and recognised the ground as they arrived.

1585 Trident Road, Three Forks, Montana, 59752, United States

Open daily year round on a Montana state park vehicle fee, generally sunrise to sunset for day use, with the campground open to registered guests seasonally. Boat launches are open in season. There is no visitor centre; interpretation is by outdoor panels, so the site is self-guiding at any hour. It is about five minutes off Interstate 90 at Three Forks.
