Missouri State Capitol

Historic Site · Jefferson City, Missouri

The third capitol built in Jefferson City, completed in 1917 after the second burned when lightning struck the dome, standing on a bluff directly above the Missouri River. Inside it holds one of the more remarkable pieces of American public art: the House Lounge, painted by Thomas Hart Benton in 1936 with a mural of Missouri life that included slavery, lynching, Jesse James and a Kansas City political boss, and which the legislature that commissioned it very nearly had removed.

201 West Capitol Avenue, Jefferson City, Missouri, 65101, United States

Open weekdays during business hours, FREE, with free guided tours running roughly hourly. Limited or no weekend opening outside the legislative session.
