Mitchell Prehistoric Indian Village

Archaeology Museum · Mitchell, South Dakota

The remains of a fortified farming village on a bluff above Lake Mitchell, occupied around AD 1000 to 1150 and now the type site of the Initial Middle Missouri tradition. A climate-controlled building stands directly over part of the excavation so you can look down into a thousand-year-old house floor while archaeologists work in it. A reconstructed earth lodge stands outside.

SEASONAL - generally open daily from spring through autumn with reduced or no winter opening; check before travelling. Ticketed. ⚠ IT IS AN ACTIVE ARCHAEOLOGICAL EXCAVATION and the summer field season is when there is most to see - work largely stops out of season, which changes the visit substantially.
