Mitchell State Park

Michigan State Park · Cadillac, Michigan

Mitchell State Park sits inside the town of Cadillac in northern Lower Michigan, on the strip of land between Lake Cadillac and Lake Mitchell. A navigable channel links the two lakes, so boaters can move from one to the other without leaving the water. The park has a swimming beach, a campground, a boat launch and fishing, and it is one of the few state parks where supermarkets, fuel and restaurants are a few minutes away. That makes it easy and convenient rather than remote. Expect a family park: warm inland lake water, motorboats and pontoons in summer, anglers year round and snowmobile traffic in winter. Weekends from late June to mid August fill the campground and the beach. Walkers will find short paths rather than a big trail system, so confirm what is open. A Michigan Recreation Passport is needed for the vehicle. Allow a few hours for a day trip, or a night or two to camp. It is not a wilderness park, and quiet, cooler weeks come in September and May.

Michigan state parks are generally open daily, year round, from early morning until about ten at night, but this park's exact gate hours, the dates of the camping season and the staffing of the office and any visitor or museum building change by year, so confirm with the Michigan DNR before a long drive. The swimming beach is normally used in summer only, roughly Memorial Day to Labor Day, and has no guaranteed lifeguard. The campground is busiest from late June to mid August and may be reduced in winter, so confirm which loops are plowed or open. Day visitors need a Recreation Passport on the vehicle. In winter the lakes freeze and the park becomes a stopping point for ice anglers and snowmobilers.
