Mizuki Shigeru Road, A Shopping Street In Sakaiminato Lined With Bronze Statues Of The Yokai Ghosts And Goblins Drawn By The Manga Artist Shigeru Mizuki, Who Grew Up Here, With A Museum And The GeGeGe No Kitaro Trains. Fun For Families. · Sakaiminato, Tottori

Mizuki Shigeru Road is a shopping street of roughly 800 m in Sakaiminato, a fishing port in Tottori Prefecture, lined with well over a hundred bronze statues of yokai, the ghosts and goblins of Japanese folklore. The figures follow the drawings of Shigeru Mizuki, the manga artist behind GeGeGe no Kitaro, who was born in Sakaiminato in 1922 and died in 2015. The road starts at Sakaiminato Station, home of the Kitaro trains on the JR Sakai Line, and runs to the Mizuki Shigeru Museum at the east end, with a small Yokai Shrine along the way. Shops sell yokai sweets and souvenirs, cafes use the monsters as a theme, and lights glow after dark. It suits families, manga fans and children, and is a light stop in a San'in trip. Allow a morning or an afternoon. It is worth the detour for the fun and the museum, and less so if you know none of the stories and dislike souvenir streets. Tottori Sand Dunes and Izumo Taisha are separate stops.
