Moaning Cavern

The largest single cave chamber in California, in the Gold Country near Vallecito — big enough to hold the Statue of Liberty with room above her torch. A 100-foot spiral staircase was built into it in 1922 and is still the way down for most visitors; the alternative is to rappel 165 feet through the roof on a rope.
